At the end of May Cordoba celebrates the Fair in honour of Nuestra Señora de la Salud (Our Lady of Health). The fiesta has a marked Andalusian flavour. There are “casetas” (marquees with food, drink and music) erected at the city’s fair ground, most of which are open to the general public.The 2012 Cordoba Fair takes place between May, 19th and May, 26th.

The week leading up to Easter, and especially Holy Thursday and Holy Friday, is full of ritual, display and devotion. Throughout the week, costaleros from Thirty Catholic associations, or brotherhoods, bear images of the Passion of Christ and of the Virgin Mary on their shoulders through the narrow streets for hours, taking turns under the heavy load. Thousands of candles and masked penitents leading the way and trailing behind, accompanied by music, add to the solemnity and symbolism.

Every year, the Montilla-Moriles Wine-tasting Festival is held in Cordoba. Over 20 bodegas (wine-cellars) take part, and the people of Cordoba come in their droves to taste the local wines and traditional tapas. There is also music to liven up the atmosphere and a variety of events, including special wine-tasting events organised by professional wine-tasters, open to visitors who apply.
