Gibraltar Airport serves the British territory of Gibraltar, and is formally owned by the Ministry of Defence. It was built and is still used for the RAF Gibraltar, but it is also used by the civilians of Gibraltar as well. Classified as a Category 3 British Regional airport, Gibraltar Airport offers its passengers an array of facilities and services including two café and snack bars, a Peninsula Lounge for Club Class passengers and Duty Free shopping. Display screens can be found throughout the terminal with up-to-the-minute flight information. As of 2004, Gibraltar Airport handled about 314,375 passengers and several hundred tonnes of cargo, and is rated as one of only handful of the Class A airports that exist in the world.
Gibraltar is unique in having an international airport located just a short distance (500m) from its town centre. Fortunately for those with baggage, there are taxis and a regular bus service just outside the terminal building.
Getting to and from Gibraltar Airport
Gibraltar Airport is connected to a regular bus service that transports passengers into town and the surrounding areas. Taxis are also available and are a fast, convenient, and slightly more expensive alternative. If visiting Spain, it's easier to walk across the frontier a few hundred yards away and collect your hire car in La Linea. Friends and relatives meeting passengers are advised to park in La Linea as it is easier to walk across the frontier with Spain than to take a car as there are usually delays to get across the border, lasting up to four or five hours. The Spanish border guards deliberately hold up and search traffic due to the continued dispute over sovereignty of Gibraltar.
