Located just 12 km from the city centre in the city limits of Loiu, Bilbao International Airport handles up to four million passengers a year. Just like Bilbao itself the airport has also undergone a facelift in recent years. Along with the Guggenheim Museum and a wonderful new underground system, the ultra-modern Bilbao Airport is another example of the modernisation the Basque capital. In 2000 the new terminal started to be used. It is a design from architect Santiago Calatrava and represents a flying dove. With two levels, the Departures Hall is located on the second and the Arrivals Hall on the first. It is said that the numbers of passengers transported are growing so fast that even this new terminal will probably be too small for the demand in a few years. This has helped attract a number of budget airline operators including Easy Jet and Air Berlin which firmly adds the Bilbao to the growing number of new city break locations in Europe.
